Since 2006, five years have gone by, and we have released seven free updates for this Calamus generation. (Good things enhance slowly.) If you still use an older version of Calamus, you should now consider to upgrade to the current Calamus 2006 R8. On Windows 7, older Calamus generations cannot be used.

Calamus - spilling the beans

Calamus SL2006

Many users asked us for a new Calamus generation to come. When we released Calamus 2006, we hoped to reach our targets even faster: a new vector output engine, a user interface renewal, a better linkage to Windows and Mac OS X, a simplified handling.

These targets beared little relation to the reality. We had ordered the development of a new vector output engine years ago, but it wasn't delivered in time, so we had to cancel this. The user interface renewal was a red rag for many experienced Calamus users, while the black&white icons deterred new interested people from trying Calamus.

We were quite satisfied with the integration of Calamus into Windows: Almost all devices can be easily accessed; the integration of the emulator was so nicely done that still today some users don't take any notice of it; the speed is absolutely fine on all computers, even too fast for some aspects. Then Windows 7 had the idea of restricting the application's rights even more. Therefore we e.g. no longer install Calamus into the Programs folder, e.g. because Calamus and its modules won't understand that their SET files are no longer in their appropriate directories although it looks like they were.

We apologize but even R8 cannot print under MagicMacX 1.2 and 2.0 on your Mac. Unlike Microsoft's Windows, Apple's operating system Mac OS X has been changed so often and so fast that both the MagicMacX developer and we didn't manage to adjust the previously used native libraries in a way to have Calamus access the Mac printers again. Also other native features like the screen calibration and the faster and better compression of PS/PDF files don't work again under MagicMacX. But we're cheerful to get this done soon. Another drop of bitterness is that the Calamus performance is about five times slower under MagicMacX than on a Windows platform on the same Mac. Thus more and more pure Mac users decided to also install a Windows platform on their Mac. This no longer is a question of religion. All platforms converge - the application software should rule.

We already started to simplify the handling in the previous updates for Calamus 2006. More and more modules now silently save changed settings in order to let you find everything in place the next time you launch Calamus. We just keep the opportunity to save own settings where it makes sense to manage different settings. More simplification to come.

What's next?

For some time we're working on these major steps:

  1. Adjustment of native Mac functions, e.g. to make direct printer access in MagicMacX available again.
  2. Simplification of user interface and handling.
  3. Native Calamus porting to Windows (maybe even platform-independent).
  4. SVG import
  5. Processing the reported issues and feature requests.

There is no defined time schedule for these steps. We will of course keep you informed. If you haven't subscribed to the free Calamus newsletter already, now is a good chance to subscribe.

Good luck with the new features in your Calamus!
